Collaborative Class Quilt

Self Assessment

  • Intentional use of the space ✅
  • Multiple materials (2+) ✅
  • Your element, represented within the context of our local forest ecosystem ✅

Artist Statement

For this collaborative quilt project, each of us designed our own quilt square based on something from the environment. I was given wildflowers, so I embroidered the stems and painted the flowers onto the fabric. Wildflowers are important because they support pollinators like bees and help different plants grow together, which makes them a key part of the ecosystem.

My square connects to the larger quilt because it represents one small part of the environment that works alongside others, like the bunchgrass and bees that my classmates created. When all the squares are sewn together, the quilt shows how different parts of nature are connected and depend on each other.

I used real BC wildflowers as inspiration but added my own ideas through the colours, stitching, and layout. I was also inspired by quilting and textile art, where individual pieces come together to create one larger image. This project showed me how everyone’s small contribution can come together to represent something bigger.

Weaving

Self Assessment

  • My weaving is at least 6 inches long ✅
  • My thread tension is correct (no holes from very loose thread/yarn) ✅
  • Loose ends are trimmed neatly ✅
  • Work was carefully removed from loom, warp threads pulled tightly and tied neatly ✅

Artist Statement

For this project, I created a woven piece using yarn and a simple cardboard loom. I used one ball of yarn that naturally changed colours from light blue to white and pale pink as I continued weaving. I liked how the colours blended together and created soft stripes across the piece without me having to switch yarn.

While making this piece, I focused on learning the basic weaving technique of going over and under the strings. At first it took some practice to get used to the pattern, but once I got the hang of it the process became easier and more relaxing. The repeating pattern helped create a consistent texture and design.

Through this project, I learned that weaving takes patience and focus. Even simple materials can create interesting patterns and textures. I enjoyed seeing how the colours of the yarn changed naturally and created the final design.

Atmospheric Perspective Painting

Self Assessment

Colour & Value

Glow:
I used a monochromatic blue colour scheme with a good range of tints and shades. The values transition from light in the background to dark in the front, which helps create depth.

Grow:
I could improve by adding more contrast between some of the sections and making the differences in value more noticeable.

Composition & Depth

Glow:
The layers clearly show in the front, middle ground, and background. The lighter blues in the back and darker blues in the front create a strong sense of depth.

Grow:
I could improve the separation between the middle ground and foreground by making the values more different or the shapes more defined.

Acrylic Technique

Glow:
The paint is applied smoothly and evenly, and most of the edges between sections are clean and easy to see.

Grow:
I could improve by making my brushstrokes more consistent and cleaning up some of the edges to make them sharper.

Photograph Series

Self Assessment

  • Three images, that together, shares something meaningful to you ✅
  • Photos can be arranged together in any way ✅
  • Your accompanying artist statement should explain the meaning the photos hold for you and how they fit together ✅

Artist Statement

This photo series shows important moments in my relationship and memories that mean a lot to me. Each photo represents a different experience we shared together.

The first photo is from the first time my boyfriend came to one of my family events, which was a wedding. It was special to me because it was the first time he was part of something important in my family.

The second photo is from when we went to prom together. This moment meant a lot to me because I never expected to go to prom with someone I loved. I always thought I would go with a friend, so getting to share that experience with him made it really meaningful.

The last photo is from our first big trip together when we left the country and went to Mexico in December. It was the first time we traveled somewhere far together and made memories just the two of us.

All three photos connect because they show different moments in our relationship and how we’ve made memories and grown together over time.
